What if the body’s own immune system could identify and destroy cancer cells? When Walter J. Urba, M.D., Ph.D., joined Providence Portland Medical Center as director of the cancer program 25 years ago, only a few people were asking that simple "what if" question.

That didn’t stop him or his team of pioneers. Today, cancer immunotherapy is a key focus of research institutions worldwide, and Providence has been part of these breakthroughs from the start. The cancer research team at Providence has proven the immune system can fight cancer – with the right therapies, we can thwart cancer’s efforts to hide and unlock the power of T cells to attack cancer. Immunotherapy works, and we are saving more lives today than ever before.

Genome Sequencing

Our sequencing program identifies genomic mutations of a patient's cancer tumor to guide development of customized treatment plans unique to that patient. It also will aid researchers in developing the next generation of targeted therapies.
