Providence Heart Institute restarted its heart transplant program in July 2020 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Since then, 10 transplants have been done, and up to 15 are projected during the program's first year. Phil and Penny Knight generously donated $75 million to develop the heart transplant program and to support cardiac services and innovation at Providence.
Tom Hatch was the first recipient under the new program. After entering the hospital on July 6 and spending two weeks in cardiac intensive care, Tom received the news that a heart was located. The next day, July 22, the heart was beating in Tom’s chest. Now, Tom is able to exercise and can walk up his stairs carrying bags of groceries. “I was very fortunate,” he said. “These doctors are nothing short of amazing.”
The West Pavilion at Providence St. Vincent will be renamed the Phil and Penny Knight Pavilion. We are very grateful to the Knights and to our many generous donors. Your gifts provide new hope for our patients with heart failure.
