John Elorriaga will long be remembered for his generous, community-minded spirit. Mr. Elorriaga died February 20, 2020 at the age of 96.
His family remembers John as humble and fair, always positive and ready with a joke or song from his youth. He and his wife Lois had six children and enjoyed a long, caring relationship for 68 years. He always said that all he ever wanted was a healthy, beautiful and loving family, and that has been his greatest accomplishment.
John retired in 1987 after a long career at US Bank. During that time he was recognized by the Oregon business community several times for his leadership and service, including Outstanding CEO of the Year in 1980 by Financial World magazine and Oregon Business leader of the year in 1982 by the Associated Oregon Industries
John and Lois Elorriaga were significant supporters of cancer research at Providence Portland Medical Center. They lost their son Michael to a rare form of cancer at a young age. To remember him and help prevent others from losing their lives to cancer, the John Michael Elorriaga Laboratory was established in 2008 in the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute at the Providence Cancer Institute.
Dr. Hong-Ming Hu leads the Cancer Immunobiology Laboratory in the Elorriaga Laboratory. Dr. Hu and his colleagues are developing immunotherapy strategies to enhance recognition and destruction of cancer cells by the immune system. Their research demonstrates there is potential to develop a shared immune response by vaccination, and these discoveries have application for the next generation of cancer vaccines.
We are grateful to the Elorriaga family for their compassionate giving and steadfast support of cancer research. May his family find peace and comfort during this time of loss.
